国の名勝・天然記念物に指定されている高千穂峡は、その昔阿蘇火山活動の噴出した火砕流が、五ヶ瀬川に沿って帯状に流れ出し、 急激に冷却されたために柱状節理のすばらしい懸崖となった峡谷です。
九州の観光地としては有名なので、テレビや雑誌で見たことがある人も多いかもしれませんね。
付近には日本の滝百選にも選ばれた真名井の滝、槍飛橋などがあります。真名井の滝は、他にはないマイナスイオンのシャワーを浴びられるスポットもあります。
さらに神話に由縁のある「おのころ島」や「月形」「鬼八の力石」など、 高千穂峡の遊歩道のみで高千穂の魅力を十分に感じることができるスポットといえます。
貸しボートは人気で休日には1時間待ち以上の長蛇の列が出来ていることも少なくありません。事前予約も出来るシステムになっていますので、どうしても乗りたい人は事前に予約してから行くようにしましょう。
※貸しボートは4,000円～となっていて、割高です。

約1900年前の垂仁天皇時代に創建されました。高千穂郷八十八社の総社で、神社本殿と所蔵品の鉄造狛犬一対は国の重要文化財に指定されています。
